Hello everyone,
Today, I feel very proud to write about something that truly deserves recognition. The recent victory of R Vaishali at the Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026 is not just another achievement – it’s a moment that reflects years of dedication, discipline, and belief.
As someone from Tamil Nadu, this feels even more special.
Chess has always had a strong connection with Chennai. Over the years, we have seen incredible talents emerge from here, and today, that legacy continues. Vaishali’s journey is a perfect example of what consistent effort and the right environment can achieve.
What makes this even more inspiring is the larger picture. We are witnessing a generation of players from our state making a global impact. Her brother R Praggnanandhaa has already made his mark on the international stage, and D Gukesh becoming World Champion has taken Indian chess to another level altogether.
This is not a coincidence. This is the result of years of hard work, strong coaching systems, and a culture that respects the game deeply.
At the same time, I believe it’s important to recognise the support system behind such success. The emphasis on sports development in Tamil Nadu under the leadership of Udhayanidhi Stalin has created a positive and encouraging environment for athletes. Infrastructure, opportunities, and encouragement at the right time can make a huge difference, and we are seeing the results of that today.
One more thing that personally moved me is the emotional side of this journey. In recent days, many clips of Vaishali’s family – especially her mother – have been circulating widely. Watching her mother support her, react to her success, and stand by her through the journey is something that really touches the heart. Behind every athlete, there is always a strong support system, and moments like these remind us of the sacrifices, belief, and emotional strength that families bring into a player’s life.
Vaishali’s victory is also a very important moment for women’s chess in India. It shows that with the right support and determination, more young players can step forward and compete at the highest level. Achievements like this inspire not just players, but an entire generation.
For me, this is more than just a win. It is a reminder of what is possible when talent meets dedication and the right support.
As Vaishali prepares for the World Championship, I wish her all the very best. She has already made the country proud, and I’m sure this is just the beginning of many more milestones to come.
Thank you for reading.
