And none of this would have been possible without the visionary leadership of our Hon’ble Youth Welfare and Sports Development Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin. 1. Chess Olympiad: July-August 2022

Let’s kick things off with one of the grandest events – the 44th Chess Olympiad, held in July and August 2022. This was the first time India hosted the Chess Olympiad, and Chennai was the proud venue for this prestigious event. With over 180 countries participating, it became one of the largest Chess Olympiads ever. The stunning backdrop of Mamallapuram added a unique charm to the intense strategic battles between the world’s greatest minds. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Hon’ble Udhayanidhi Stalin, Tamil Nadu was able to successfully host this global event, showcasing our state’s rich tradition in nurturing chess talent.

2. Chennai Open ATP Challenger: February 2023

In February 2023, Chennai became the epicenter of world-class tennis action with the Chennai Open ATP Challenger. 3. Asian Hockey Champions Trophy: August 2023

In August 2023, Chennai proudly hosted the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy, one of the most anticipated events in Asian sports. Six of the best teams from Asia competed fiercely, with matches that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Chennai’s fans, known for their unwavering support of hockey, turned out in droves to cheer for the teams, especially India. This tournament not only boosted hockey’s popularity in Tamil Nadu but also reaffirmed Chennai’s position as a premier destination for international sports events. The seamless organization and the electric atmosphere were a testament to the hard work of our Hon’ble Sports Minister.

4. Tamil Nadu International Surf Open: August 2023

Surf’s up in Chennai! August 2023 saw our city host the Tamil Nadu International Surf Open, a part of the World Surf League’s Qualifying Series. Held at Mahabalipuram, this event attracted surfers from all corners of the globe, eager to ride the pristine waves of the Bay of Bengal. This groundbreaking event marked Tamil Nadu’s debut on the global surfing scene. It was exhilarating to watch surfers from different countries showcasing their skills, and it’s all thanks to the forward-thinking vision of Hon’ble Udhayanidhi Stalin, who has been tirelessly working to diversify the sports culture in our state.

5. Squash World Cup: June 2023

Chennai’s love for squash is well-known, and in June 2023, our city had the honor of hosting the Squash World Cup. The competition was fierce, and the matches were nothing short of spectacular. 6. Formula 4 Street Circuit: August 2024

In August 2024, Chennai revved its engines as it hosted India’s first-ever Formula 4 night street race. This exhilarating event was held on a specially designed 3.5 km street circuit around the Island Grounds and Victory War Memorial, making Chennai the new hub for motorsports in India. The circuit, featuring 19 thrilling turns, was a spectacle, with the iconic Napier Bridge lit up in a chequered flag design. This groundbreaking event, initiated under the leadership of Hon’ble Udhayanidhi Stalin, was a massive success and marked a new chapter in India’s motorsport history. 7. IPL Finals & Cricket World Cup: May & October-November 2023

As every cricket fan knows, Chennai is cricket-crazy, and in 2023, our city had the privilege of hosting two of the biggest cricket events of the year – the IPL Finals in May and key matches of the ICC Cricket World Cup in October and November. The iconic Chepauk Stadium was abuzz with excitement as fans from around the world gathered to witness these monumental events. The IPL Finals were filled with edge-of-the-seat action, while the Cricket World Cup brought the world’s best teams to our city. Hon’ble Udhayanidhi Stalin ensured that these events were organized flawlessly, making Chennai shine on the global cricket stage. 8.  Khelo India Youth Games
